On September 4, 2015, The Clifton Journal reported that Clifton City council revisited the issue of illegal indoor smoking at local establishments, and plan to lobby New Jersey lawmakers to strengthen the state smokefree air act to allow for additional penalties than only monetary, such as the ability to temporarily close down a business for continuous smoking violations , similar to laws that shut down bars if minors are served alcohol.

Last month, officials revealed that four Middle Eastern-themed restaurants were fined $75,000 for unlawful smoking violations based on the NJ Smokefree Air Act.
