Belleville celebrates Kick Butts Day with GASP/YMCA ribbon cutting ceremony (Belleville Times, Mollie Gray)

To celebrate National Kick Butts Day on March 16, on March 9 Global Advisors on Smokefree Policy hosted its “Art for Health” program for the YMCA’s after-school program at Belleville Elementary #7.  The children made posters to spell out “Kick Butts Day” and decorated each letter about why it’s important to live tobacco-free.

The next day on March 10, GASP hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the high school grounds, with local leaders organized by Councilman Vincent Cozzarelli and the children joining in to display their signs at the event. The ribbon-cutting celebrated Belleville’s smokefree parks policy, and it kicked off Kick Butts Day 2016 which is March 16.

Belleville is a leader in tobacco control in Essex County. Not only does it have smokefree parks and also requires age 21 to be sold tobacco and e-cigarettes. It is the first Essex County town to require stores selling e-cigarettes to obtain a license from the local health department.
