Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey

tobacco_free_logoTFHNJ is the name of the statewide tobacco control effort. TFHNJ members include GASP and other community-based organizations with varied areas of expertise in tobacco control, prevention and cessation.

TFHNJ partners seek environmental policy and social change regarding tobacco exposure, use and prevention. Our main goals are:

  • Decrease exposure to second- and third-hand smoke.
  • Reduce the acceptability of tobacco use.
  • Reduce tobacco use, especially amongst priority populations, by promoting tobacco cessation resources.
  • Provide resources on how tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure increase the risk of diabetes.
  • Raise awareness about the need for a sustained statewide tobacco control program in New Jersey.

In years past, GASP works towards achieving all of TFHNJ’s goals by:

  1. Providing technical assistance on how to decrease exposure to second- and third-hand smoke, which reduces tobacco use acceptability.
  2. Promoting tobacco cessation and tobacco cessation resources on our website, during presentations to public health educators and healthcare providers.
  3. Sharing resources on how tobacco products and secondhand smoke increase the risk of diabetes during presentations to diabetes educators and healthcare providers, and via GASP’s dedicated Diabetes and Smoking Resources webpage.
  4. Educating the public and diabetes educators about U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s Diabetes Integration Project. Link to our diabetes page to read descriptions of each Project Partner who can provide one-on-one resources on how to reduce tobacco use and promote tobacco prevention.
  5. Communicating with policymakers on success stories of new Jersey’s tobacco control program, and on how funding cuts to statewide tobacco control programs negatively impact progress on the state’s strategic plan for reducing tobacco use and exposure, and increasing tobacco prevention.
