Hookah Bars May Soon Be a Lot Tougher to Find (New York Magazine, Samuel Lieberman)

New York Magazine reported that NYC’s City Council members are taking steps to stop the loophole in the city’s smoking ban which currently does not regulate non-tobacco products used when smoking hookah. Councilman Vincent Gentile has proposed a bill that does not allow for any new hookah lounges, and requires meeting criteria to allow for a hookah lounge to serve and let patrons smoke nontobacco shisha.  Councilman Ydanis A. Rodriguez introduced a bill that would prohibit the sale of nontobacco shisha, rolling paper and hookah pipes to anyone under age of 21. These bills would require that shisha only be sold in hookah bars, tobacco bars and tobacco stores.
