Enforcement Agencies

The New Jersey Smoke-Free Air Act is enforced by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJ DHSS) and by local health departments. You can find local health departments via:

  • local municipal government offices
  • the NJ DHSS website's searchable database and downloadable list of local health agencies, the municipalities over which they have jurisdiction, and their contact information
  • the NJ DHSS, 609 292-4993
  • the government listings section (blue pages) of most telephone directories
  • the NJ DHSS, Division of Local Public Health Practice and Regional Systems Development, P.O. Box 360, Trenton, NJ 08625-0360.

Note: The law is enforced by the health department that serves the municipality where the violation occurred. Some municipalities are served by a regional or county-wide health department.

More info: A health department is an administrative and enforcing agency, like a police department. A board of health is a rule-making body, like a town council.
