Fort Lee discusses a Tobacco 21 ordinance (Fort Lee Suburbanite, Svetlana Shkolnikova)

Posted on

On October 16, The Fort Lee Suburbanite reported that Fort Lee is discussing an ordinance to raise the age of sale for tobacco products to 21.  At a Council work session meeting, Global Advisors on Smokefree Policy’s Executive Director Karen Blumenfeld, Esq. (GASP) provided educational materials and answered questions, especially related to towns not being preempted by state law. Blumenfeld noted that the New Jersey Office of Legislative Services issued a recent opinion letter in favor of municipalities enacting tobacco 21 laws.

GASP reported that this past summer, Fort Lee made its outdoor dining smokefree, and last year, Fort Lee banned smoking in the borough’s public parks and facilities.
